The Legalise Cannabis WA Party (LCWA) has announced a signature commitment to establish a $300 million Hemp Innovation Fund, aiming to significantly boost Western Australia’s hemp industry. This pledge is contingent upon the party’s success in the upcoming state election and the anticipated revenue from cannabis legalisation.

Strategic Vision for Hemp Development

LCWA’s Regional Development spokesperson, Mel D’Ath, highlighted the party’s dedication to supporting the hemp sector through this proposed fund. She emphasized hemp’s versatility, noting its applications in construction, textiles, and healthcare. D’Ath stated,

“We know that hemp is one of the most innovative products on the market today. It is being used to build houses, replace single-use plastics, clothe, and heal.”

She further explained that a significant portion of the fund would be allocated to start-up and research grants for local WA companies aiming to bring new and innovative hemp applications to market. This initiative is expected to create jobs and retain wealth within local communities.

Economic Potential and Infrastructure Development

D’Ath highlighted the global hemp industry’s current valuation at $6.3 billion, with projections to exceed $25 billion by 2032. She emphasized Australia’s unique position, with its 426 million hectares of agricultural land, to become a leading hemp producer. To achieve this, the proposed fund aims to expand processing facilities in the South West of the state, alleviating bottlenecks that constrain the industry.

Funding Source and Industry Support

LCWA’s Parliamentary Leader, Hon. Dr. Brian Walker MLC, clarified that the $300 million commitment is part of the estimated $1.25 billion revenue boost anticipated from cannabis legalization. He stated,

“We want that money to be spent across the community, but it is only right and proper that a substantial chunk of the additional revenue achieved by government goes back into the hemp industry, and allows us to make Western Australia a powerhouse in terms of cutting-edge hemp production.”

Margaret River Hemp Co’s Perspective

As a proud member of Western Australia’s hemp community, we at Margaret River Hemp Co are excited about this development. Our founder, Georgina Wilkinson, shared her enthusiasm:

“Backing the Industrial Hemp Industry with innovative hemp products will be a game changer for Western Australia’s housing and textile industries. Unlocking a billion-dollar market for eco-friendly, locally produced materials—WA is in a unique position to be the first state to do this.”

With the state election approaching, LCWA’s commitment underscores a dedication to sustainable industry growth, positioning Western Australia at the forefront of hemp innovation.
